Gifts For Architects In 2015

With the holiday season rapidly approaching I thought I would share some gifts for architects you may want to consider.

I essentially created this post so I can forward it to all of my friends and family. I am kind of joking...

Architects are very particular about what we buy.

As a result it can be very difficult to buy for the architect in your life. Let me help.

So whether your buying for an architecture student, an aspiring architect or a licensed architect this will help you answer the question: "what gifts do architects want?"

Whether you are trying to focus in your cubicle, in studio or on a flight these Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling earbus are your best bet.

External Battery Pack

For all those gadgets it is great to have a power pack to take with you.

The great thing about this external battery pack is how quickly it can be charged up - only an hour and a half.  There’s an LED screen that shows you the remaining power as a percentage, and displays how many minutes it will take to recharge it. There are also two ports, so you can charge two devices simultaneously.

Messenger Bag

I use this messenger bag myself. It is a professional looking, non "man purse" minimalist option. Great for interviews, meetings or laptop (this one is for a 13", it is also available in 15").

Money Clip Card Case

I am a big fan of all of TUMI's stuff. They are best known for their travel products but they have a lot of great accessories like this. The quality and attention to detail is great.

KeySmart - Comact Key Holder

This is a great way to avoid the "high school janitor keyring" look. Made with aircraft aluminum in a range of colors, this swiss army style key holder will create the perfect pocket organizer and minimalist keyring.

Moleskin Sketchbook

Moleskin are THE sketchbooks for architects. There is no substitute.

Book: 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School

A great book for an architecture student or an architect at any stage in their career.

Cards Against Humanity

Wait until after Grandma goes to bed on Christmas to break out this endlessly fun game.

The Architecture of the Cocktail

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Camera

If the architect on your list has been extra good this year. This is hands down one of the top cameras in the world. From the Taj Mahal to the Pantheon this beautiful camera will capture any architectural wonder in stunning quality.

Architecture Career Guidance

Sorry, I have to include a shameless plug for my own products. If you know an aspiring or practicing architect that is looking to advance their career, check out The Complete Package. I also offer personal one-on-one coaching services to help take their architecture career to the next level.

What not to buy

It is also worth mentioning a few gifts that are often touted as being "a great gift for architects!" Usually the first thing I think is, "I really hope I don't get that for Christmas."

Here are a few things NOT to buy.

Expensive Pens

This is a very popular one. Owning a $500 fountain pen (yes they exist) gives me a panic attack at the thought of losing it. So much so that it will likely remain in a locked drawer at home. Yes, we do like drawing but whatever pen is lying around will do just fine.

Lego Architecture

Architects are grownups. While we did enjoy building with them as children I don't want a Lego Fallingwater on my desk.

Since we are in the design profession fashion is somewhat important to architects. Skip the quirky shirt with the ironic text.

I hope this list of gifts for architects has been helpful. Happy Holidays!
