These versatile tables are a must-have for architecture students, draftspersons, and anyone who wants to create an accurate technical drawing by hand. To help you select which one is best for you, I have outlined the various features below along with a list of the best drafting tables currently available.

UPDATED: March 22, 2022.

MY TOP PICK:
If you are looking for the best overall, I recommend the Studio Designs Comet Art table because it features a steel frame, a side table that remains flat for supplies, and drawers for additional storage.

While architecture design and construction drawings today are primarily done using computer software such as Revit and AutoCAD there will always be a place for hand drafting. One of the essential components to creating an accurate technical drawing is a quality drafting table.

RELATED: The 10 Best Drawing Tablets

Here of some features and components to be aware of when selecting a specific drafting table:

Table Angle

The defining feature for a drafting table is the ability to adjust the angle of the table surface. The table placed in its lowest position will be flat, or zero degrees relative to the floor. The table can then be pivoted about the leading edge of the table on a hinge. Once the desired angle is reached it is then typically locked into place with a hand screw to prevent movement.

The maximum angle will vary based on the specific table however it typically ranges from approximately 45 to 70 degrees from the horizontal. This angle allows for a better drawing position compared with a standard table, making it easier to reach all areas of the sheet.

The angle you regularly work with will be up to your personal preferences. I prefer a steeper angle however it can make your arms tired over time compared with a more shallow angle. You will need to try out what table angle works best for you and your specific situation.

Table Height

In addition to adjusting the angle of the surface some tables offer the ability to adjust the height. I recommend getting an adjustable height top if you are going to be using the table for extended periods of time. This added flexibility helps to regularly switch up the seat height and drawing position to help with reducing strain on the arms and lower back. Some models will even move up enough to allow for a standing position.

Table Area

The usable area of each table will vary by manufacturer so check that the size is sufficient to fit your typical project or drafting board.

There is typically little downside to going with the largest tabletop as it allows for a greater range of potential projects. However, depending on your space availability you may want to go with a more compact form factor.

Table Materials

Table surfaces are typically constructed from laminate, wood, or glass. The main structure of the table will either be made of wood or steel to provide a rigid frame to reduce movement while drawing. The drawing surface material is important to note unless you will be using a drawing board on top.

Some people prefer drawing on a softer wood surface compared to working directly on glass. The harder surface creates a different feel that some users may or may not like. The advantage of a glass top is that it can also function as a light table with a lamp placed below.

If you are going to be prominently displaying the table, I recommend going with an all-wood design as I find these to be more aesthetically appealing.

Pencil Ledge

A pencil ledge is a very simple component found on most drafting tables. It is a small metal or wooden piece located on the user side of the table edge. This is used to prevent papers and drafting pencils from sliding off the table when it is in an angled position. It can also be put down to allow for a flat edge if it is in the way when resting your arms on the table.

Storage

In addition, some tables offer a separate area on the side that remains flat even when the table is angled. This is particularly helpful when working with paints or other accessories you need to access that must stay level. In addition, some models come equipped with drawers and open storage fixed to the side of the table surface. These can be convenient for placing equipment both while working and for stockpiling items in the long term.

Stools

Some tables will come with a stool which is great for quick projects. However, if you are going to be working for more than a couple of hours at a time I recommend investing in a quality drafting chair. These offer greatly improved comfort and adjustability compared with a basic stool. This will help to reduce back stain other discomforts when working for long periods.

Now, on to the individual products. Each unit included below has been assigned a key feature that makes it particularly noteworthy and has been broken down according to its essential functions to help you make an informed selection. I have included a range of types so you can find the one that will help solve your particular drawing needs.
